From Tuscaloosa to Santa Barbara: Madeline & Kurt’s Wedding Day
Madeline and Kurt’s story began at the University of Alabama, where they met at a bar in Tuscaloosa. Years later, Kurt proposed on the Riverwalk there, making the whole thing feel full circle.
“Alabama will always hold a special place in our hearts because it’s where our story began.”
For their wedding, they chose a place that felt equally timeless.
“We knew we wanted our wedding to feel timeless, traditional, and romantic. We fell in love with the beauty and charm of Santa Barbara and Montecito and wanted our venues to reflect that classic elegance.”
A French Vision, in California
The couple knew they wanted California, and they knew they wanted a French feel. Their planner, Caroline of Caroline Events, helped them find the right way to combine the two.
“They really wanted a very French feel. They knew they wanted California, and originally they were thinking wine country, but that leans more toward a barn. So I said we could either transform a barn or look for a venue that already had that beautiful French look. We found the Baccarat chandeliers in the Rosewood ballroom, and then with Gro Designs adding all the candelabras, we created their own classic, traditional, gorgeous French wedding.”
Getting Ready
The morning started with help from some trusted people. Madeline worked with Vangie at Neiman Marcus and her mom on everything from the wedding dress to her weekend looks, and Caroline helped her find sweet getting-ready nap dresses.
Madeline’s mom had her own priority when it came to her look.
“My mom has incredible style, but her biggest priority was finding a dress she could dance in all night while still looking beautiful in photos!”
The morning itself was relaxed and happy.
“It was such a fun, relaxing morning! We spent time together laughing and enjoying the excitement before the nerves started to kick in.”
The Bridesmaid Reveal
Madeline grew up with all of her bridesmaids, which made their reactions especially meaningful.
“Having them be some of the first people to see me in my dress was incredibly special. Seeing their reactions was a moment I’ll never forget!”
Moments with Mom and Dad
Her parents’ reaction was one of the sweetest moments of the morning.
“I knew they would be emotional, but seeing how proud they were and feeling how much they love Kurt and me made that moment even more meaningful.”
The “Fake” First Look
Not every first look goes exactly as planned, and this one wasn’t meant to! Madeline, Caroline, and Caroline’s husband came up with the idea of having Kurt’s best man, Bubba, surprise him instead.
“Thankfully, Kurt had no idea! Watching his reaction from my suite was absolutely hilarious.”
The Real First Look & Private Vows
Then came the real one.
“I felt every emotion at once: excitement, happiness, nerves, and relief. After so much anticipation, I was just so happy to finally see Kurt. It was such a peaceful moment.”
Madeline and Kurt chose to exchange personal vows privately, before the ceremony.
“We wanted our ceremony to focus on the sacred commitment we were making before God, while still having a private moment to share our personal vows. It was one of the most meaningful parts of our day.”
The Ceremony
Their faith was at the center of the ceremony.
“We wanted our ceremony to reflect the significance of marriage and the promises we were making before God, surrounded by our family and friends.”
The setting echoed the weekend’s Santa Barbara character. Caroline says they stayed true to the vision they’d built.
“We kept that vision going on the wedding day, with lots of lush florals at the ceremony and that Santa Barbara vibe from the Spanish-style church.”
Madeline’s favorite memory is one most brides know well: the walk toward the person waiting for them.
“Walking down the aisle and realizing I was about to marry my best friend. It was such an overwhelming and beautiful feeling.”
When It Sank In
When did it finally feel real? After the ceremony, when no one else was around.
“Right after the ceremony, we walked outside the church before anyone else came out. For a few moments, it was just the two of us. That quiet moment together was when it really sank in that we were husband and wife.”
