Fashion’s biggest night, the Met Gala, occurred this Monday, September 13 at the tail end of New York Fashion Week. Every year the gala celebrates the Costume Institution’s new exhibit which this year celebrated “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”. I previously wrote about how “there is power in the message your clothes can deliver” in How to Look to the Runway for Tangible Inspiration and there is no better demonstration than this year’s gala. Celebrities, models, designers and socialites looked to American icons past to inform their event uniform.
Kendall Jenner became a modern day Eliza Doolittle taking the Met steps as if they were the embassy ball. Emily Blunt became 2021’s Ziegfeld Girl with the help of Miu Miu. Yara Shahidi donned Dior to honor an OG American icon, Josephine Baker, whom you may have thought was French until Monday night. The look that stole the show however was Kaia Gerber, daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford, wearing an Oscar de la Renta gown inspired by an iconic Dior design worn by Bianca Jagger. The response to her gown is so overwhelmingly positive I can’t help but think, “This is the response you want to your wedding gown.”
So as you make bridal appointments and seek “the one”, I recommend you approach your trousseau as a Met Gala guest. Who do you want to honor? What statement do you want to make? How can you personalize this statement with your personal love story? With the answers to these questions, I know you will wear something unforgettable!
