For Audra and Owen, their wedding day was about becoming husband and wife and bringing together the people, places, and experiences that had shaped their lives. It was a chance to celebrate with the people they loved in a place that held special meaning to them both.
Owen, a Naval Academy graduate and Navy officer, and Audra, a Florida native who has also spent significant time in Washington, D.C., brought people from all different walks of life together for a beautiful celebration at the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis. The result was a wedding that felt deeply personal, with thoughtful details woven throughout the day to honor the places and people who brought them to that moment.
From a Georgetown Dive Bar to the Naval Academy Chapel
Long before they were exchanging vows at the Naval Academy, Audra and Owen’s story began in a much less formal setting: a basement dive bar in Georgetown.
The two were introduced by mutual friends while Owen was still at the Naval Academy and rowing on the heavyweight crew team. What Audra didn’t know was that their first date would come with an audience.
When she walked down the stairs into the bar, she was greeted by Owen and, much to her surprise, what felt like half of the heavyweight crew team. The group stood up, clapped, cheered, and made sure Audra knew they were there to see who this girl was who Owen was going on a date with.
“Absolutely mortifying,” she said, laughing at the memory.
But Audra passed the test, and then some.
The crew spent the evening sending Owen fruity drinks and referencing a song that would eventually make another appearance years later at their wedding reception: “International Harvester.” To their surprise, Audra knew every word, and recited it right back to them. What started as an iconic meet-cute became the beginning of a nearly seven-year (and counting) love story.
And, in a fitting full-circle moment, those same friends who crashed their first date would eventually play another memorable role in their wedding day.
A Ceremony of Reverence, a Reception of Hospitality
For Audra and Owen, the wedding day had two distinct halves, each with its own purpose.
“We wanted a ceremony centered on the gospel, with a sense of formality and reverence that felt fitting for the Naval Academy chapel and the commitment we were making. But when it came to the reception, we really just wanted to be good hosts. We wanted everyone we love to feel taken care of, eat well, dance all night, and leave saying they had an incredible time.”
That balance, reverence in the chapel, warmth and hospitality at the reception, set the tone for everything that followed.
A Celebration of the Places That Made Them
With family and friends coming from all over the country, Audra and Owen wanted the wedding to feel like a gathering of all the different chapters of their lives.
One of the sweetest details was found at each reception table.
Rather than simply numbering the tables, Audra and Owen named them after cities that held significance in their story. From Audra’s Florida roots and her time in Washington, D.C., to Owen’s many moves throughout his military career and the places connected to their family and friends, each table represented a different piece of their journey. Cambridge, Massachusetts, was an especially meaningful addition. After spending their entire relationship long-distance, it would be the first city they would call home together.
It was a small detail, but one that perfectly captured what the wedding meant to them: bringing together people from all the different places and seasons of life that had led them there.
Audra’s family also brought a little piece of Florida to Annapolis. Coming from a citrus and cattle background in Florida, her parents brought up local Florida strawberry-orange juice to be used for the evening’s signature cocktails.
It was a delicious, and very personal, way to bring home with them to the celebration.
The Moment It All Felt Real
One of Audra’s favorite memories happened just after the ceremony, when she and Owen went upstairs in the chapel and looked down at their guests from above.
From that bird’s-eye vantage point, they could see everyone who had come to celebrate them, friends and family from all of the different places and chapters of their lives, finally gathered in one place.
Some guests noticed the newlyweds looking down and waved.
But one moment in particular stayed with Audra.
Her maternal grandmother, who had never met Owen’s paternal grandmother before the wedding, walked out of the chapel arm in arm with her. Both women were widows, and watching them leave together, arm in arm, was a quiet, unexpected moment that Audra and Owen were lucky enough to witness from above.
“They don’t know that we saw that,” Audra shared.
It was the kind of moment that could easily have gone unnoticed, but from their vantage point, Audra and Owen got to take it all in.
And that was when it truly sank in: they were married.
Their families were becoming one, their friends and loved ones were all there, and the many different worlds that had shaped them had come together to celebrate the beginning of their life as husband and wife.
And Then, There Was the Airborne Bride
Of course, no Navy wedding story would be complete without a little tradition, and a little chaos.
Later in the celebration, Audra found herself being tossed into the air by Owen’s groomsmen.
It was a moment captured perfectly in photographs, but the story behind it makes the images even better.
Audra had seen this tradition at other Navy weddings and knew there was really only one way to handle it: lean in.
“You have to lean in,” she said. “If you don’t, that’s how you end up on the ground or somewhere else,” she laughed.
So she did. She leaned in.
Meanwhile, their photographer, Stephanie, watched from the stage with a mix of excitement and mild concern, giving Audra a knowing shrug as if to say, “Well, here we go.”
But Audra knew what was coming.
The same group of guys who had shown up to meet her at that basement bar in Georgetown years earlier were now tossing her into the air at her wedding reception. What began as a hilarious first-date initiation had come full circle in the most fitting and loving way.
A Day That Felt Like Them
From a Naval Academy chapel ceremony to Florida strawberry-orange juice, city-inspired table names, unexpected moments between grandmothers, and a bride catching air on the dance floor, every part of Audra and Owen’s wedding reflected their unique story.
It was a celebration of where they came from, the people who shaped them, and the many different paths that eventually brought everyone together in Annapolis.
Most of all, it was a reminder that the best wedding days aren’t always the ones that go exactly according to plan. Even with a little rain (or a lot), they’re the ones filled with the people, places, traditions, and little unexpected moments that make the story uniquely yours.
For Audra and Owen, their wedding wasn’t simply the beginning of their marriage. It was a celebration of everything, and everyone, that brought them there.
