Finding the Space
For Grace and Austin Pipkin, the rehearsal dinner was always meant to feel like more than just the first event of their wedding weekend. They wanted a space that felt distinctly Dallas, brought everyone together under one roof, and complemented the bright, colorful celebration to come.
The story of the evening began when Grace and Austin toured the Crescent Hotel together and unexpectedly discovered the Crescent Club upstairs. They immediately fell in love with the space, but what Grace didn’t know was that her mother-in-law-to-be, Liz Pipkin, would take that initial vision and turn it into a completely personalized evening, carefully planned as a surprise for the couple.
We sat down with Grace and Liz to hear how the rehearsal dinner came together, from finding the unexpected venue and creating a design that complemented the wedding to keeping the details under wraps and ultimately revealing the finished celebration to Grace and Austin. The result was an intimate, colorful evening that brought together the people they love most and set the tone for an unforgettable wedding weekend.
Austin had a clear vision from the start: he wanted the rehearsal dinner to feel unique, somewhere special rather than a traditional country club setting, and he was just as invested in the menu as he was in the venue itself.
“We started looking at different venues. We toured the Crescent Hotel, and while we were there, the woman leading us around said, I think you should look at the Crescent Club, which we didn’t even know was an option. We loved it immediately. It’s old Dallas, it’s been here a long time, and the view was incredible.”
Grace remembers that same moment, discovering a space neither of them knew existed.
“We toured the Crescent Hotel, and then we were kind of like, what about upstairs? The woman leading us was like, we have this one spot that might be available. She brought us up there, and it was an immediate yes. We were obsessed with it.”
The appeal wasn’t just the space itself, it was what it allowed. With guests traveling from Louisiana and Houston, Grace and Austin wanted a rehearsal dinner and welcome party that felt easy for everyone to be part of.
“We wanted a space that everyone could be at, and there wasn’t any leaving, like going to this area or that area. I would say the overall theme of our wedding weekend was truly convenient. We had a hotel block at the Crescent Club, so it made it easy for everyone.”
A Vision That Didn’t Compete with the Wedding
Austin’s mother took full reins on the planning, kept largely a surprise for Grace, and one guiding principle stuck with her throughout.
“I just kept telling everyone, I don’t want to compete with the wedding, I just want to complement it. I don’t ever want it to feel like a competition. That’s not my concern at all. I love Grace and Austin, and that’s all that mattered to me.”
Grace felt that intention from the very beginning.
“One thing she kept saying was she wanted it to complement the wedding. We got married August 1st, so we wanted it to be bright and sunny and happy and colorful, with flowers and all of our people around.”
That cohesion mattered deeply to Grace, especially given her own background in the wedding industry.
“Working in the wedding industry, I’d been to so many weddings where the rehearsal dinner was a completely different vibe from the wedding. I really wanted the whole wedding weekend to be cohesive, whether you’re looking at a paper good or going to a party. I just wanted it all to work well together.”
Bringing the Design to Life
The Crescent Club’s moody, traditional interior became the starting point for the design.
“The Crescent Club is very dark, heavy wood, so we knew we needed to lighten it up. I love color, so between that and knowing generally what Grace was doing for the wedding, that’s how we landed on the overall design.”
The result struck a careful balance: comfortable, warm, and intentional down to the smallest detail.
“We wanted people to feel comfortable, not crowded. The room was a great size, and I thought it was really special that all the speeches happened in front of that big window.”
An Intimate Evening, Even in a Big Room
Despite the size of the celebration, the evening felt close and personal.
“It was very large, but it really felt intimate. I don’t know a better way to explain it. She absolutely crushed it. I know I’m biased, but that was the best rehearsal dinner I’ve ever been to.”
The room’s layout was perfect, from lounge groupings to high-boy tables to the placement of the DJ and band.
“The space reminded me of a really chic New York restaurant. I love New York, so immediately I was obsessed.”
The Moment It All Came Together
For Austin’s mother, the evening’s true meaning had little to do with the design, and everything to do with the people in the room.
“When we finally sat down and I looked around the room and saw all the people who loved Austin and all the people who loved Grace, that’s what mattered to me. Everyone looked comfortable. It was just a warm moment to have all of our favorite people in one room.”
The reveal itself, kept secret from Grace until the very end, was exactly as special as she’d hoped.
“We all walked in together, and they were just taking it in, taking pictures. Grace looked incredible. It was just fun.”
A Night Guests Won’t Forget
The evening didn’t go unnoticed by the guests in the room, either. To bring the vision to life, Mrs. Pipkin leaned on Keely Thorne Events and GRO Floral Design, the same creative teams helping shape Grace and Austin’s wedding day. Their familiarity with the couple’s overall wedding vision made it possible to create a rehearsal dinner that felt beautifully connected to the weekend while still standing on its own.
“I had a few people tell me it was one of the prettiest rehearsal dinners they’d ever been to. I’m not trying to take credit, I may have approved it, but I didn’t have anything to do with the design.”
A Kickoff to Wedding Weekend
The rehearsal dinner was the perfect way to kick off the wedding weekend, bringing everyone together in a setting that felt warm, joyful, and completely true to Grace and Austin. More than just the first celebration, it set the stage for what was to come, introducing the bright, colorful, and cohesive feel that would carry through the rest of the weekend.
For Liz, the evening was also about preserving those moments, and she was especially impressed by the way they were captured.
“The John Cain Photography team did a great job. It was incredible the way y’all captured the moments.”
