Tucked away in Mexico’s central highlands is the colonial city of San Miguel. Pulsing with life, the city boasts color-drenched streets, centuries-old architecture, contemporary art, splashes of bougainvillea, and a vibrant culinary scene. The magic of San Miguel nearly crackles through the air.
For Alexa and Tristan, this set the scene for their destination wedding. They wanted to share their love of travel with loved ones and friends. “I was so excited thinking people are just going to be blown away by the magic of the city,” Tristan shared.
One of the city’s grandest features was the ceremony site: the ornate sanctuary of Iglesia de San Francisco. Built in 1778, the intricate details of the church’s architecture are tucked into every tile, stone, and flourish. To complement the churrigueresque (excessively ornate) style of architecture, Alexa showed no restraint in filling the church with glowing explosions of yellow, gold, and white flowers.
“I really wanted to lean into the romance of the city,” she shared about planning for the wedding’s show-stopping florals. “The flowers were such a fun part for me. Even before we knew we were going to San Miguel, I always loved romantic color palettes with reds, oranges, and peaches.”
Even the stucco walls of San Miguel’s streets conformed to Alexa’s colorful vision, creating a striking backdrop for the bridal party. At the reception at the Rosewood San Miguel, Alexa’s colorful blooms spilled through the courtyard, across tablescapes, and around the white grand piano where her sister performed an original song she wrote for the couple. “It is the most incredible song I’ve ever heard,” Alexa shared. “It was out of this world, and there was not a dry eye in the house.”
Alongside the vibrant setting of the wedding, what was most important to Alexa and Tristan was the experience they gave to their guest. Alexa treasures the photos that captured the love and delight her grandmother experienced. The couple went out of their way before the wedding to write personalized notes to guests who had birthdays and recent engagements. “What was most important to us was making sure that everyone felt really loved for the love they were showing to us for traveling to be with us on our wedding day.”
Their favorite moment from the day wasn’t grand or splashy. It was standing together at the top of the stairs, overlooking the tent and the gathering guests. “We held our cocktails, little Prosecco glasses with popsicles in them, and we were just in there, arm in arm, like looking out at everything that had just taken us this entire past year to bring together. It was a moment to really pause and soak it in together,” Alexa shared.
Together in that moment, they had the opportunity to see their original wedding vision come to life.
“We knew the magic of the city would be the backdrop, and people were going to make their own memories there. We wanted to share our love of culture and travel, and bring a new experience into people’s hearts. We always love to do that ourselves.”
